how to create a professional server with the below mentioned services?or where can i the answer to this from?
I’m running a data sharing software on a network of 100 user(OS Xp pro)I’m getting a high speed DSL (8Mbps) soon and i want to convert my PC into a proper server to do the following jobs smoothly.
1 Internet Sharing
I)want to use PPPoe to Assign dial up ac to users on the network so only the authenticated user may access the internet, and i want to assign different net bandwidth to different users.
2)Controlled Network Gaming
I want to Disable,Enable and Monitor the network gaming on network (how to control it through server(like;ban or create secessions, etc’s)
3)Share data on the server
4)Disable Network Resources to users
NO file sharing between users(but i also want to know how to enable it when needed)
What hardware do i need for the server to run on best performance?
What Os and softwares do i need to run the above 4 services and how do i configure them?
What network gear do i need, cable, switch, etc
Any Networking forum where i could get the answer for this.
With the greatest respect I think those questions are exceeding what you can reasonably expect from a free advice forum such as this (at least if you want good quality, accurate and complete answers). You are well into the realm of paid consultancy there. That will cost money be will proabbly pay for itself in short order, not that I am volunteering.
A few pointers though. Firstly what internet package are you using? A consumer grade DSL broadband package is not going to be up to the job. 8Mbps connectivity is fine but you need that bandwidth on a reliable basis that is not subject to sudden slowdowns at times of congestion. You’re probably talking about at least $200 a month for suitable conenctivity. If that sounds a lot remember it is only $2 a seat.
As for network gaming what you are asking for sounds attractive but bare in mind it is complex and therefore expensive. It is far easier to ban everything outright than to have a switch you can flick when you want everyone to get back to work or your computer network back.
For your server, there are far too many unknown variables here. How much storage capacity? What bandwidth is needed? The requirements of the server depend entirely on your usage. A basic desktop PC may do the trick, but equally you may need an ultra high performance, highly redundant fileserver. Based on what you have written here there is no way to tell.
As for physically installing the network and what equipment you need, get the professionals in – it WILL pay for itself. I have been to several similarly sized networks assembled by end users where resolving a simple difficulty takes forever. I’ve literally seen what should be $100 jobs turn into $3000 or more jobs on networks around this size – not once but many times. A network assembled out of a hundred patch leads with poor or inaccurate labelling needs tracing out in full for each fix – something that literally takes all day. If that kind of thing happens to you then the first time you need a consultant for troubleshooting the additional costs will make up for whatever you saved installing the network and more besides, and you’ll be facing similar cost each and every subsequent time.
Far easier to spend a little money and ensure you get it right first time.

Linux Server Hacks $19.99 A competent system administrator knows that a Linux server is a high performance system for routing large amounts of information through a network connection. Setting up and maintaining a Linux server requires understanding not only the hardware, but the ins and outs of the Linux operating system along with its supporting cast of utilities as well as layers of applications software. There’s basic documentation online but there’s a lot beyond the basics you have to know, and this only comes from people with hands-on, real-world experience. This kind of “know how” is what we sought to capture in Linux Server Hacks . Linux Server Hacks is a collection of 100 industrial-strength hacks, providing tips and tools that solve practical problems for Linux system administrators. Every hack can be read in just a few minutes but will save hours of searching for the right answer. Some of the hacks are subtle, many of them are non-obvious, and all of them demonstrate the power and flexibility of a Linux system. You’ll find hacks devoted to tuning the Linux kernel to make your system run more efficiently, as well as using CVS or RCS to track the revision to system files. You’ll learn alternative ways to do backups, how to use system monitoring tools to track system performance and a variety of secure networking solutions. Linux Server Hacks also helps you manage large-scale Web installations running Apache, MySQL, and other open source tools that are typically part of a Linux system. O’Reilly’s new Hacks Series proudly reclaims the term “hacking” for the good guys. Hackers use their ingenuity to solve interesting problems. Rob Flickenger is an experienced system administrator, having managed the systems for O’Reilly Network for several years. (He’s also into community wireless networking and he’s written a book on that subject for O’Reilly.) Rob has also collected the best ideas and tools from a number of other highly skilled contributors. Written for users who already understand the basics, Linux Server Hacks is built upon the expertise of people who really know what they’re doing. |
