Scalable Network Monitoring in High Speed Networks

Scalable Network Monitoring in High Speed Networks

$99

Network monitoring serves as the basis for a wide scope of network, engineering and management operations. Precise network monitoring involves inspecting every packet traversing in a network. However, this is not feasible with future high-speed networks, due to significant overheads of processing, storing, and transferring measured data. Network Monitoring in High Speed Networks presents accurate measurement schemes from both traffic and performance perspectives, and introduces adaptive sampling techniques for various granularities of traffic measurement. The techniques allow monitoring systems to control the accuracy of estimations, and adapt sampling probability dynamically according to traffic conditions. The issues surrounding network delays for practical performance monitoring are discussed in the second part of this book. Case studies based on real operational network traces are provided throughout this book. Network Monitoring in High Speed Networks is designed as a secondary text or reference book for advanced-level students and researchers concentrating on computer science and electrical engineering.Professionals working within the networking industry will also find this book useful.

The Tao of Network Security Monitoring

The Tao of Network Security Monitoring

$54.99

Every network can be compromised. There are too many systems, offering too many services, running too many flawed applications. No amount of careful coding, patch management, or access control can keep out every attacker. If prevention eventually fails, how do you prepare for the intrusions that will eventually happen?. Network security monitoring (NSM) equips security staff to deal with the inevitable consequences of too few resources and too many responsibilities. NSM collects the data needed to generate better assessment, detection, and response processes—resulting in decreased impact from unauthorized activities. In The Tao of Network Security Monitoring , Richard Bejtlich explores the products, people, and processes that implement the NSM model. By focusing on case studies and the application of open source tools, he helps you gain hands-on knowledge of how to better defend networks and how to mitigate damage from security incidents. Inside, you will find in-depth information on the following areas.: The NSM operational framework and deployment considerations.; How to use a variety of open-source tools—including Sguil, Argus, and Ethereal—to mine network traffic for full content, session, statistical, and alert data.; Best practices for conducting emergency NSM in an incident response scenario, evaluating monitoring vendors, and deploying an NSM architecture.; Developing and applying knowledge of weapons, tactics, telecommunications, system administration, scripting, and programming for NSM.; The best tools for generating arbitrary packets, exploiting flaws, manipulating traffic, and conducting reconnaissance. Whether you are new to network intrusion detection and incident response, or a computer-security veteran, this book will enable you to quickly develop and apply the skills needed to detect, prevent, and respond to new and emerging threats.

Web Analytical Tools – Monitor The Performance Of Your Website

When a website is intended to sell something, it is vital for the site to receive a good number of visitors. Generally, low traffic equals low profits. To be able to attract enough visitors, of course you need to popularize your site. However, without keeping track of the effectiveness of the methods or systems that you put into use to promote your website, it will only waste your time, money and energy. This is where web analytical tools come into play.

Quite simply, website stat programs or log analyzers can help you monitor and analyze the behavioral patterns of the people who come to your site, including what they do on your site. Once you know from where most of the visitors come to your site you can focus your marketing efforts primarily on that particular market segment. For instance, if most of the visitors come from certain article directories, you can submit more articles to the directories.

Such programs can also help you decide whether you should continue using an advertising service or not. If that service has never given a good contribution to your site until after a given period of time, then you may discontinue using it. Nothing is worse than paying for something that does not work to the specified target.

Although different programs may provide different features, yet the information presented is generally not much different. The most common pieces of information are on unique visitors, site references and referrals, entry pages, exit links, visit lengths, browsers, and countries/ISP. By using this information you can find out things like how many times a certain web page has been visited within a certain periode of time or what are the most popular pages on your site.

Keep in mind that even though your hosting service has already provided you with web analytical reporting tools like WebAlizer or AWStats, it is wise to also use another web analytical tool like StatCounter or Google Analytics. If not, you may missinterpret some details like the total number of visitors per day. Usually the number is much higher when viewed with WebAlizer or AWStats.

Clearly, website stats are necessary to make better decisions regarding your online business. By using reliable log analyzers you can improve the performance of your site as well as the effectiveness of your marketing campaign.

Web Design in a Nutshell

Web Design in a Nutshell

$27.99

Are you still designing web sites like it’s 1999? If so, you’re in for a surprise. Since the last edition of this book appeared five years ago, there has been a major climate change with regard to web standards. Designers are no longer using (X)HTML as a design tool, but as a means of defining the meaning and structure of content. Cascading Style Sheets are no longer just something interesting to tinker with, but rather a reliable method for handling all matters of presentation, from fonts and colors to the layout of the entire page. In fact, following the standards is now a mandate of professional web design. Our popular reference, Web Design in a Nutshell , is one of the first books to capture this new web landscape with an edition that’s been completely rewritten and expanded to reflect the state of the art. In addition to being an authoritative reference for (X)HTML and Cascading Style Sheets, this book also provides an overview of the unique requirements of designing for the Web and gets to the nitty-gritty of JavaScript and DOM Scripting, web graphics optimization, and multimedia production. It is an indispensable tool for web designers and developers of all levels. The third edition covers these contemporary web design topics: Structural layer: HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1.0 (9 chapters), including an alphabetical reference of all elements, attributes and character entities Presentation layer: Ten all-new chapters on Cascading Style Sheets, Level 2.1, including an alphabetical reference of all properties and values. Behavior layer: JavaScript and scripting with the Document Object Model (DOM) Web environment: New web standards, browsers, display devices, accessibility, and internationalization Web graphics optimization: Producing lean and mean GIF, JPEG, PNG, and animated GIFs Multimedia: Web audio, video, Flash, and PDF Organized so that readers can find answers quickly, Web Design in a Nutshell , Third Edition helps experienced designers come up to speed quickly on standards-based web design, and serves as a quick reference for those already familiar with the new standards and technology. There are many books for web designers, but none that address such a wide variety of topics. Find out why nearly half a million buyers have made this the most popular web design book available.

bothered by sysctrl.exe……an activity monitor?

i use a shared computer in my office and someone has installed this spyware on it. The name of the process is sysctrl.exe. I fear that someone can read my personal mails. Is there any way to remove it without knowing the password? I checked some tools on the net but they all charge money for it. Plz suggest me some free alternative. THNXX!!

Download process Explorer ( Freeware)

http://download.cnet.com/Process-Explorer/3000-2094_4-10223605.html

It will help you pinpoint the location of the file sysctrl.exe. Once you have found out, restart your PC in safe mode, and delete the exe file. That should do the trick.

I would suggest never to use shared computers for sending sensitive information. Your bank details, email ids etc could all be logged.

Learning Visual Basic .NET

Learning Visual Basic .NET

$27.99

Most Visual Basic .NET books are written for experienced object-oriented programmers, but many programmers jumping on the .NET bandwagon are coming from non-object-oriented languages, such as Visual Basic 6.0 or from script programming, such as JavaScript. These programmers, and those who are adopting VB.NET as their first programming language, have been out of luck when it comes to finding a high-quality introduction to the language that helps them get started. That’s why Jesse Liberty, author of the best-selling books Programming C# and Programming ASP.NET, has written an entry-level guide to Visual Basic .NET. Written in a warm and friendly manner, this book assumes no prior programming experience, and provides an easy introduction to Microsoft’s most popular .NET language. Learning Visual Basic .NET is a complete introduction to VB.NET and object-oriented programming. This book will help you build a solid foundation in .NET, and show how to apply your skills by using hundreds of examples to help you become productive quickly. Learning Visual Basic .NET introduces fundamentals like Visual Studio .NET, a tool set for building Windows and Web applications. You’ll learn about the syntax and structure of the Visual Basic .NET language, including operators, classes and interfaces, structs, arrays, and strings. Liberty then demonstrates how to develop various kinds of applications–including those that work with databases–and web services. By the time you’ve finished Learning Visual Basic .NET, you’ll be ready to move on to a more advanced programming guide that will help you create large-scale web and Windows applications. Whether you have a little object-oriented programming experience or you are new to programming altogether, Visual Basic .NET will set you firmly on your way to mastering the essentials of the VB.NET language.

Programming .NET Web Services

$31.99

Web services are poised to become a key technology for a wide range of Internet-enabled applications, spanning everything from straight B2B systems to mobile devices and proprietary in-house software. While there are several tools and platforms that can be used for building web services, developers are finding a powerful tool in Microsoft’s .NET Framework and Visual Studio .NET. Designed from scratch to support the development of web services, the .NET Framework simplifies the process–programmers find that tasks that took an hour using the SOAP Toolkit take just minutes. Programming .NET Web Services is a comprehensive tutorial that teaches you the skills needed to develop web services hosted on the .NET platform. Written for experienced programmers, this book takes you beyond the obvious functionality of ASP.NET or Visual Studio .NET to give you a solid foundation in the building blocks of web services, and leads you step-by-step through the process of creating your own. Beginning with a close look at the underlying technologies of web services, including the benefits and limitations, Programming .NET Web Services discusses the unique features of the .NET Framework that make creating web services easier, including the Common Language Runtime (CLR) and the namespaces used in .NET programming. Filled with numerous code examples using the C# language, the book leads you through some of the more challenging issues of web services development, including the use of proxies, marshalling of complex data types, state management, security, performance tuning and cross-platform implementation. The book also covers: Creating and publishing your first web service The UDDI project, tModels and what they mean for web service publishers Securing web service applications Written for programmers who are familiar with the .NET Framework and interested in building industrial-strength web services, Programming .NET Web Services is full of practical information and good old-fashioned advice.
