In this commanding big-picture analysis of what went wrong in corporate America, Alex Berenson, a top financial investigative reporter for The New York Times , examines the common thread connecting Enron, Worldcom, Halliburton, Computer Associates, Tyco, and other recent corporate scandals: the cult of the number. Every three months, 14,000 publicly traded companies report sales and profits to their shareholders. Nothing is more important in these quarterly announcements than earnings per share, the lodestar that investors—and these days, that’s most of us—use to judge the health of corporate America. earnings per share is the number for which all other numbers are sacrificed. It is the distilled truth of a company’s health. Too bad it’s often a lie. The Number provides a comprehensive overview of how Wall Street and corporate America lost their way during the great bull market that began in 1982. With fresh insight, wit, and a broad historical perspective, Berenson puts the accounting fraud of the past three years in context, describing how decades of lax standards and shady practices contributed to our current economic troubles. As the bull market turned into a bubble, Wall Street became utterly focused on “the number,” companies’ quarterly earnings. Along the way, the market lost track of what companies are really supposed to do—build profitable businesses with sustainable futures. With their pay soaring, and increasingly tied to their companies’ shares, executives were more than happy to give Wall Street the predictable earnings reports it wanted, what-ever the reality of their businesses. Accountants, analysts, money managers, and individual investors played along, while the Securities and Exchange Commission found itself overwhelmed and underequipped to cope with the earnings game. The Number offers a unified vision of how today’s accounting scandals reflect a broader system failure. As long as investors remain too focused on the number, companies will find ways to manipulate it. Alex Berenson gives anyone who has ever invested in—or worked for—a public company the tools necessary to see beyond the cult of the number, understand accounting and its limits, and recognize patterns that can lead to fraud. After two decades of stock market hype, The Number offers a welcome dose of truth about the way Wall Street and corporate America really work. From the Hardcover edition.

Number is an eloquent, accessible tour de force that reveals how the concept of number evolved from prehistoric times through the twentieth century. Tobias Dantzig shows that the development of mathfrom the invention of counting to the discovery of infinityis a profoundly human story that progressed by trying and erring, by groping and stumbling. He shows how commerce, war, and religion led to advances in math, and he recounts the stories of individuals whose breakthroughs expanded the concept of number and created the mathematics that we know today.
Our understanding of how the human brain performs mathematical calculations is far from complete, but in recent years there have been many exciting breakthroughs by scientists all over the world. Now, in The Number Sense, Stanislas Dehaene offers a fascinating look at this recent research, in an enlightening exploration of the mathematical mind. Dehaene begins with the eye-opening discovery that animals–including rats, pigeons, raccoons, and chimpanzees–can perform simple mathematical calculations, and that human infants also have a rudimentary number sense. Dehaene suggests that this rudimentary number sense is as basic to the way the brain understands the world as our perception of color or of objects in space, and, like these other abilities, our number sense is wired into the brain. These are but a few of the wealth of fascinating observations contained here. We also discover, for example, that because Chinese names for numbers are so short, Chinese people can remember up to nine or ten digits at a time–English-speaking people can only remember seven. The book also explores the unique abilities of idiot savants and mathematical geniuses, and we meet people whose minute brain lesions render their mathematical ability useless. This new and completely updated edition includes all of the most recent scientific data on how numbers are encoded by single neurons, and which brain areas activate when we perform calculations. Perhaps most important, The Number Sense reaches many provocative conclusions that will intrigue anyone interested in learning, mathematics, or the mind. "A delight." –Ian Stewart, New Scientist "Read The Number Sense for its rich insights into matters as varying as the cuneiform depiction of numbers, why Jean Piaget's theory of stages in infant learning is wrong, and to discover the brain regions involved in the number sense." –The New York Times Book Review "Dehaene weaves the latest technical research into a remarkably lucid and engrossing investigation. Even readers normally indifferent to mathematics will find themselves marveling at the wonder of minds making numbers." –Booklist
The essential tool kit to achieve breakthrough sales performance improvements . Numbers don’t lie: 40 percent of all salespeople miss their targets each year. How can sales managers ensure their teams are doing everything possible? The key lies in benchmarking, which is not new for finance or manufacturing but rarely gets applied to sales. Making the Number will teach executives to embrace data-driven decision making and rely less on gut instinct. Comparing a sales force to those of relevant peers leads to many opportunities to improve performance. The authors take readers through their five-step methodology for sales benchmarking, showing how to select metrics; gather, compute, and compare internal and external data; and then actually use the data. Making the Number includes case studies of sales benchmarking in action. For example, find out how Discover Financial Services plays David to the Goliaths of MasterCard and Visa. Whether you’re a sales rep, a manager, or a CEO, this book will show you a better way to make your number.
Micki Jordan, publicist to the brightest stars in the sports world, has decided to end her tomboy ways–effective immediately. Now, Micki wants to find a new man to fit her new life. Current leading contender Damian Fuller is a professional ballplayer and a major-league playboy. Will the new Micki have a chance at winning Damian's affections? Or will the wildest player in the league turn around and steal Micki's heart for good?
A dozen years after David Ball scored a well-deserved hit with the updated honky tonk of Thinkin’ Problem, the South Carolina native is still in the game even if mainstream country radio has turned its back on him, and his eighth album, Heartaches by the Number, is a lively and superbly crafted tribute to the sounds of Nashville’s noble past. Packing 12 songs into just over half an hour (just like they did back in the old days), Heartaches by the Number features 11 country standards played with no small skill by a polished but emphatic band of Music City pickers, with the fiddle and pedal steel accents conjuring up the spirit of Nashville’s Golden Age while Ball finds just the right emotional pitch for each song, whether it’s the sentimental “Faded Love,” the boozer’s lament “There Stands the Glass,” or the bitter farewell of “Pick Me Up on Your Way Down.” Ball’s voice, slightly rumpled but clear and strong, fits these tunes like a glove, and he wrote one new tune for this set, “Please Feed the Jukebox,” a hymn of praise to honky-tonks everywhere that’s one of the disc’s highlights. In fact, the song is good enough to point out this album’s most obvious flaw — Ball has chosen some great songs for Heartaches by the Number, but they’re also ones that any serious country fan already knows by heart, and while he sings up a storm on each number, no one is ever going to top Patsy Cline on “Sweet Dreams” or Hank Locklin on “Please Help Me I’m Falling.” Rather than just celebrate country’s past, “Please Feed the Jukebox” shows Ball can still make a little history of his own, and it’s a shame he doesn’t do a bit more of that on Heartaches by the Number, though anyone who loves a classic honky tonk song will still find this album to be glorious stuff. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Performers: Joe Spivey – Fiddle, Guitar (Acoustic); Perry Coleman – Vocals (Background); Chris Leuzinger – Guitar (Electric); Larry Paxton – Bass; Owen Hale – Drums; Tommy White – Guitar (Steel)

How Tha Carter III came to be “the most anticipated rap album of 2008″ is a story that involves the usual delays and promises of a masterpiece, plus a whole lot of bullet points that could only exist in the absurd world of Lil Wayne. There’s his complete annihilation of the mixtape game, the ridiculous amount of guest shots he granted since Tha Carter II made him a hip-hop superstar, that photograph of him kissing his mentor, Birdman, rumors of addiction to the sizzurp, plus the gargantuan ego and aggravating aloofness (Wayne will ignore all incoming beefs and infuriate challengers even further by offering the lethal “I don’t listen to your records”). His “best rapper alive” quote is discussed to death, but if that claim includes creating perfectly crafted full-lengths in a 2Pac style, the evidence won’t be found here. Tha Carter III is instead a surprisingly casual album that takes numerous listens to sort out, and only part of a puzzle that is scattered across mixtapes, guest shots, and Internet leaks. Had he included another easy-access single like “Rider” from The Drought Is Over, Pt. 4 — just one of his mixtape series that made it to a Pt. 5 — the “classic” argument could be considered, but figuring out what to sacrifice from this high-grade jumble is difficult. It wouldn’t be the electro-bumpin’ “Lollipop,” an infectious track that contains the wonderfully Wayne line “I told her to back it up/Like burp, burp.” You certainly wouldn’t want to lose key cut “Phone Home,” where the maverick adopts an alien voice and drops “I could get your brains for a bargain/Like I bought it from Target.” Another Weezy special from way outside the hip-hop universe comes in the striking “Dr. Carter,” when the football reference “And you ain’t Vince Young/So don’t clash with the Titan” dances on a David Axelrod sample and an unexpected jazzy production from Swizz Beatz. Giant meets giant when Jay-Z stops by for the velvet-smooth hangout session “Mr. Carter,” and with Babyface laying the stylish swagger all over “Comfortable,” Wayne gets the opportunity to convincingly vibe in the land of true class. Just like on Tha Carter II, Robin Thicke ends up the most complementary guest, coating Wayne’s post-Katrina tale “Tie My Hands” in warm buttery soul. As the track flows from political commentary (“My whole city’s underwater, some people still floatin’/And they wonderin’ why black people still votin’/Cuz your President’s still chokin’”) to despair and onto some moving “keep your head up”-styled verse, it proves Wayne can go deep and connect with his audience if he chooses. You can fault him for not connecting enough on the album and further complicating his unmanageable body of work with this disjointed effort, but Wayne’s true masterpiece is the bigger picture and how he’s flipped the script since the first Carter rolled out. Filled with bold, entertaining wordplay and plenty of well-executed, left-field ideas, Tha Carter III should be considered as a wild, somewha
